What is Design Thinking?


Design Thinking is a popular concept started by David Kelly and Tim Brown of Stanford. It is as creative as the name sounds. Design thinking is a unique way of solving problems by focusing on the needs of the users. It is all about encouraging people so that they can explore different alternatives creating solutions that were not available before. Design thinking helps in broadening perspective and create better results.

Design Thinking can be broken into steps or methods for a clearer explanation:


As the word suggests, it is very important for the designers and businesses to deeply understanding the user and have thorough insights regarding the potential users and the non-obvious truths about the users. The designers need to connect with their users by keeping themselves in the user’s shoe and completely know what they might think, feel or experience.

Know the Problem

Once you have created an empathetic connection with your users then the businesses need to focus on the problems that their users are facing. The key feature here is to understand the needs that a user may have and are not deriving it from the product or service being offered. Problems can be defined by observation or collective qualitative data.

Generate Ideas

The problem and needs have to be carefully assessed. The designing team will have to come up with various solutions to the needs and problems of the users are going through. This step is brainstorming new ideas without the constraints of the existing solutions. Design thinkers should come up with as many ideas as possible as there may be a good chance that the optimal solution can be obtained by combining 2 or more of these radical ideas. Thinkers need to keep in mind that these ideas should be practical and as creative as possible.

Build a Prototype

A prototype is executing ideas and getting possible results further applying them practically to see whether the solution is resolving the need or problem of the user. Try building the best idea as quickly as possible because each need is an opportunity for someone. Ideas generated has to be practically channelized to create a potential result that can be tested easily.

Test the Prototype

Now, this can be done in various ways where the Company could try their prototype internally among their employees to understand the outcome or choose a sample size who have common interests or behavior. This helps Businesses to come up with the best possible method of serving their users. Building a prototype is a tricky business as it constantly needs to be modified and remade until the perfect result is achieved.
